We want your furnace running smoothly with no unexpected mishaps so that you can enjoy the most wonderful time of the year with peace of mind knowing that your home will be kept warm and cozy. Furnaces usually send out signals for different issues that help indicate there might be a deeper issue going on. Don’t ignore these signals amidst the business of the season. The last thing we want for you is to be stuck in an unheated home. Here are some of the most frequent questions for furnaces:
Are There Lights Blinking?
Blinking LED lights on a furnace are visual signs your furnace uses to tell you something is wrong. It could be due to an internal clog or blockage. It could also mean the pilot light is not lit. There are several things it could mean. If you checked the pilot light and it needs to be relit, you can refer to the next question for instructions on how to relight your pilot light. If you are still having trouble, please call a service technician as soon as you can.
Is The Pilot Light Out?
Does the pilot light need to be relit? If so, check on your furnace to locate the directions. If you can’t find them, here are some general steps:
- Turn the pilot setting off.
- Wait five minutes to let the gas dissipate.
- Turn the pilot setting back on.
- Hold the reset button down. Then, raise the flame from your lighter near the opening of the pilot light.
- Let go of the reset button.
Are There Any Sounds?
Rattling, popping, buzzing and banging noises are all audible signals that alert you when something is going on. We recommend performing a quick check to see if there are any loose screws or overlooked debris lying around your furnace. These can contribute to any rattling noises. A loose screw could also mean a panel may need to be tightened. If your furnace is making any of these sounds and you have not located the issue it is vital to contact a professional.
Is It Running Nonstop?
Remember, dirty filters are notorious culprits for a constantly running furnace. Air filters capture things like pet hair, dust particles, and debris. If the filter is not being regularly changed, it will restrict airflow and cause the furnace to continuously overwork itself. If you have tried swapping out your air filters and are still encountering this issue, go ahead and give us a call and we will get your appointment scheduled as soon as possible.
Is It Blowing Cold Air?
If your furnace isn’t blowing warm air, check the air filters. Yes, we’ve already discussed the need to change air filters, but we cannot stress this enough! Clogged air filters cause numerous furnace issues. So inspecting your air filters should be the first step when a problem comes up with your furnace. Another reason your furnace might be blowing cold air is if the pilot light has gone out. Check to see that it is still lit.
