Is your pilot light out, causing only cool air to be blown out of your furnace? If so, there’s no need to worry. Your Troy Furnace & Air Conditioning service professionals have thought several steps ahead for you and put an instruction plan in place so that if the need arises, you have an easy step-by-step guide showing you how to get your furnace back up and running again. The good news is that relighting a furnace pilot light is a relatively simple process that you can do yourself, but keep in mind that it’s crucial to follow these steps carefully to avoid any potential safety hazards.
WHAT ARE THE STEPS YOU SHOULD KNOW TO RELIGHT YOUR FURNACE’S PILOT LIGHT?
Furthermore, it’s important to note that most manufacturers place pilot relighting instructions on the side of each furnace. However, it’s not uncommon for this label to be hard to read due to the unit’s location or lack of sufficient lighting in the area. Therefore, we always stress the importance of following the manufacturer’s instructions when possible. But in case you are not able to keep reading, below for some general directions:
1. Find the pilot light on your furnace (you may or may not have a burner cover you need to remove first) and turn the gas valve to the “off” position. This is a safety precaution as it will cut off the flow of gas to the pilot light, which is absolutely essential to prevent gas from building up in the furnace.
2. Next, turn off your furnace entirely. Usually, the power switch is located at the base of most furnaces.
3. Now that everything is shut off, wait a few minutes for the gas to dissipate. For safety reasons, please do not skip this step. This is an important safety step to ensure that there is no gas built-up when you try to relight the pilot light. For reference, a minimum of five minutes is recommended before proceeding to the next step.
4. Once five minutes have passed, you can turn the knob on the pilot light assembly to the “pilot” position. Doing this enables gas to flow back to the pilot light. Then while simultaneously pressing “reset”, slowly bring an ignited long-reaching lighter or match closer to the pilot light opening to ignite the flame. Proceed with caution. Once you are close enough, the pilot light should spark on. You may release your hold on the “reset” switch at this point. Your pilot light should stay aglow from here on.
5. Don’t forget to turn your gas supply back on!
6. Replace your burner cover if you have one, and give your furnace sufficient time to warm back up again before you notice your home starts warming up! Now kick your feet up and enjoy the coziness and warmth of your home once again!
If the pilot light still does not stay lit upon release of the “pilot” switch, you may be dealing with a system-related issue. In this case, we highly suggest contacting a professional HVAC professional for assistance. A professional will have the knowledge and expertise to safely and effectively assess the problem and replace any components as necessary.
